The Beast Of Gevaudan - History’s most terrifying and well-documented cryptid

Credits to jimbo999 on abovetopsecret.

A creature appeared in rural France in the 1760’s that terrified the locals for 4 years, brutally killed possibly more than 100 people (mainly women and children), and forced the King of France at the time (Louis XV) to send in the army, and then the Royal huntsman to put an end to it’s life. Seemingly, they all failed. Well documented and nationally well known in France, the story of The Beast of Gevaudan (La Bete - or ‘The Black Beast”) is still little known in the English-speaking world. Enjoy.

La bête du Gévaudan, or the Beast of Gévaudan, as we call her in English is one of the most enigmatic crypto zoological mysteries. Unlike stories about werewolves and big foots however, there is an astounding body of evidence that the Beast was real with over a hundred recorded deaths. Most of the historical data about la Bête is in French and the stories and legends have not been well documented in English until just recently thanks to the work of author and retired Flyer Officer in the Armanents Branch of the Royal Air Force, Derek Brockis.

There was the case of the girl, her little brother having been snatched away, who bravely rushed into the wood after him and found him peacefully lying there on his back, apparently intact but in fact lacking liver, entrails and blood. The girl who cried to warn her sister, “There’s a big wolf behind you”, turned and ran, only to see her sister’s head bowling along the ground. The girl lost her mind. mooThe little boy who, on 21st July 1765 went to fetch the family cows from their walled meadow near the village of Auvert and simply never returned. At the time La Bête was being sought locally by the wily aristocrat M. Antoine, the King’s Gun bearer, who posted his hunters in pairs on paths all over the district. There has always been a question mark over his policy. Why did he post guards at night, when, contrary to the behaviour of most werwolfish monsters, La Bête usually attacked in the daytime? The first thing the searchers found was the boy’s shoes standing in the road, then all his clothes lying almost untorn in the meadow. Of the boy himself nothing was ever found.

labete.7hunters.net…

This creature was reported being as big as a large calf or young cow, it was covered with a fur that was reddish, the head was big and wolf-like, and more brown than the rest of the body, the jaws are always gaping, the ears are short and straight, the chest white and very broad, the tail very long and thick, the tip white, the back paws very big and long, according to some having hooves like a horse, those of the front were shorter and covered with a long fur, having six claws to each paw. Once when the creature was sighted crossing a river, it raised itself on its hind legs and waded over like a human being. Furthermore it was very agile and extremely strong. It was sometimes sighted in locations very far apart on the same day. When hunting it crawled almost with its belly to the ground. One shepherd claimed it could stand up on its rear legs and was strong enough to lift a fullgrown sheep with its arms. Dogs fled in terror from it as most other animals. One odd fact worth noting, is that some measurements of distances between footprints showed the creature could make leaps of over 28 feet on level ground, when running.

The Beast is a quadruped about the size of a horse. It reminds witnesses of a bear, hyena, wolf and panther all at once. It has a long wolf-like or pig-like snout, lined with large teeth. The ears are small and round, lying close to the head. The neck is long and strong. The tail somewhat resembles the long tail of a panther, but it is so thick and strong that the Beast uses it as a weapon, knocking men and animals down with it. Anyone struck by the tail reports that it hits with considerable force. The feet of the Beast are the hardest to describe. Some say that it has cloven hooves, or that each digit is tipped with a hoof. Others say that the claws are so heavy, thick and formidable that they merely resemble hooves

www.newanimal.org

The Beast of Gévaudan (French: La Bête du Gévaudan; IPA: [la bɜt dy ʒevɔdɑ̃], Occitan: La Bèstia de Gavaudan) is a name given to man-eating wolf-like animals alleged to have terrorized the former province of Gévaudan (modern day département of Lozère and part of Haute-Loire), in the Margeride Mountains in south-central France from 1764 to 1767 over an area stretching 90 by 80 kilometres (56 by 50 mi).[2] The beasts were consistently described by eyewitnesses as having formidable teeth and immense tails. Their fur had a reddish tinge, and was said to have emitted an unbearable odour. They killed their victims by tearing at their throats with their teeth. The number of victims differs according to source. De Beaufort (1987) estimated 210 attacks, resulting in 113 deaths and 49 injuries; 98 of the victims killed were partly eaten.[2] An enormous amount of manpower and resources was used in the hunting of the animals, including the army, conscripted civilians, several nobles, and a number of royal huntsmen.[2] All animals operated outside of ordinary wolf packs, though eyewitness accounts indicate that they sometimes were accompanied by a smaller female, which did not take part in the attacks. The story is a popular subject for cryptozoologists.

A fearsome giant ‘warrior wasp’ discovered in a tropical forest in Indonesia

New to nature No 63: Dalara garuda

The newly discovered giant wasp, Dalara Garuda
The newly discovered giant wasp, Dalara Garuda, is 2.5 inches long. Photograph: UC Davis

Lynn Kimsey, director of the Bohart Museum of Entomology at the University of California in Davis, has discovered a 2.5in wasp that has jaws longer than its front legs and a particularly fierce appearance. The description of the species is not yet published so its scientific name is not official, but Kimsey will name it Garuda, after the national symbol ofIndonesia – a mythological, part-human, part-eagle warrior that has wide wings, great speed and superb fighting skills.

Her Garuda, which she describes as the Komodo dragon of wasps, was collected in the Mekongga Mountains on Sulawesi island, which, like Australia and Madagascar, has an inordinate percentage of species found nowhere else on earth. As curator of a collection with half-a-million wasps from around the world, Kimsey instantly knew that this beast was unusual.

The Garuda is a predator of other insects and belongs to the genusDalara in the wasp family Crabronidae. Although little is yet known of the natural history of this winged beast, Kimsey points to behaviours in related species of Dalara that may explain its extraordinary mandibles. Some males sit at the nest entrance and guard against parasites and other wasps that rob nests. This vigilance is repaid with a sexual encounter each time the female returns. Kimsey notes that the Garuda’s “jaws are big enough to wrap around the female’s thorax and hold her during mating”.

A team of scientists exploring the plants, animals, and fungi of Sulawesi have collected about one million specimens over the past four years. Kimsey estimates that among the wasps alone there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of species new to science. She is concerned about the loss of tropical forests and what that portends for species diversity. So many wasps, so little time.

Basilisk

The name Basilisk from the Greek word Basileus meaning King. The Basilisk was said to be the king of serpents and as legend tells was one of the most poisonous creatures on earth.

The Basilisk has been depicted in a few illuminated manuscripts in the Middle Ages but appeared much more often as an ornamental detail in church architecture, adorning capitals and medallions. The best representation of the Basilisk is found in the decorative field of heraldry where the basilisk had the head and legs of a cock, a snake-like tail, and a body like a bird’s. It seems that the wings could be depicted as either being covered with feathers or scales.

The ancient Romans were said to have called this creature “ regulus” or little king, this was said to be because the Basilisk terrorized all the other creatures with its poison and deadly look.

According to rural legends there are three main types of Basilisk:

The golden Basilisk- This was said to poison everything by looking at them

The evil-eyed Basilisk- This type was said to have terrorized and killed creatures with a third eye that was set on top of its head.

The sanguineness Basilisk-This Basilisk was reputed as being able to make the skin fall off the bones of its victims with its sting.

According to the legends all three of these creatures had deadly breath, which could even make rocks crumble.

Description

The appearance of the Basilisk has always been a matter of dispute, as there is no way to see a Basilisk and survive, living to tell the tale because, according to legend, if you looked at a basilisk it would cause your death. According to the stories told through generations of people, there have been three main descriptions of the creature. They describe the basilisk as a huge lizard, a giant snake or a three-foot high cockerel with a snake’s tail and fangs. These descriptions are very similar to that of the legends of the Cockatrice.

The ancient Romans had described this creature’s color as being yellow, sometimes with a kind of blackish hue. Plinius also mentioned a white spot on his head, which could be misinterpreted as a diadem or a crown. Others speak of three spikes on his forehead.

The Basilisk was referred to as the king in some legends, as it was reputed to have had a mitre or crown-shaped crest upon its head. According to the stories of this creature it was reputed to have hatched by a cockerel from a serpents egg (the reverse from the legends of the Cockatrice, which was said to be hatched from a hen’s egg incubated by a serpent).

Origin

It is thought that the Basilisk is native to Africa, and that they can allegedly be found in desert settings as according to some its breath and sight are so destructive that it can turn any landscape into a sandy desert. There are those that believe that the Basilisk may have arisen from tales of the Egyptian cobra whose characteristics have, from oral transmission, been exaggerated. This cobra has a white marking on its head, powerful venom that he spits without the need to bite, and the ability to move with its head held upright. The mongoose, rather like a weasel, can kill cobras.

Strengths And Weaknesses

The Basilisk was said to have been able to kill, at a distance, either by producing venom or by looking at its victim. The legends state that its glance could kill instantly and its breath could break stone.

Like the stories told of the Cockatrice the Basilisk can be killed in three way:

The Weasel- People who hunted the Basilisks would often take a weasel into the Basilisk’s cave, where the weasel would bite the Basilisk repeatedly. If the weasel were to be bitten, it would eat some rue, the only plant the Basilisk could not wither. The weasel would then return to full strength, renewing it’s atttack.

Mirrors- As the stories go, men who hunted this creature would a mirror, which would be able to reflect the Basilisks deadly glare upon it.

A Rooster’s crow- This method is also described as being able to kill this creature, it is also told in stories that a crowing cock can also kill Fairies, Ghosts and Vampires.

Basilisk Uses After Death

The Basilisk was said to be of some use to people after it had died. According to the stories, a carcass of a Basilisk was suspended in the temple of Apollo and in private houses, as a sovereign remedy against spiders. The carcass was also said to be used in the temple of Diana, as no swallow would have ever entered the sacred place.

According to various stories silver that was rubbed with the ashes of a Basilisk would give the appearance of being gold.

The Symbol Of The Basilisk

The Basilisk is almost always seen as an icon of fear. In various writings the Basilisk is said to have played many roles, Sometimes it would fall into the realm of the fabulous salamander where it would be used to symbolize the destructive fire that preceded the transmutation of metals. In other works, the elixir, or Philosopher’s Stone, a potent and mysterious catalyst that was said to turn whatever it touched to gold, cure all ills, and confer eternal life, was named the Basilisk or Cockatrice. During the Renaissance, Christianity rediscovered the creature in the context of the Old Testament and used it sparsely as an emblem of the devil and sin.

Bipedal Canine Cryptid Reported Near Taylors Falls, Minnesota

Found the following article whilst browsing taken from http://naturalplane.blogspot.com/2012/01/bipedal-canine-cryptid-reported-near.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Phantoms

I received this email last night. It was forwarded by a witness in Minnesota who describes a bipedal canine cryptid. I have not discussed this incident with the witness so I’m presenting the sighting ‘as is’:

Hello - I was steered to you by a man I know up north from here. He said that you are interested in these things so I figured I’d send an email.

I live in Taylors Falls, Minnesota and I was driving north on WildMountain Rd. around 7 am. on Jan 2nd. I was heading for the ski area when I saw some kind of animal running in the field towards the river. I pulled off the road and grabbed my binoculars. It looked like a large wolf but it was different. By that time some guy in a truck pulled up and was wondering what I was looking at. I told him that I think there is a large wolf in the field. He got out of the truck and asked to use the binoculars. He said he didn’t think it was a wolf and that it looked like it was chasing something.

We stood for a few minutes watching. It would run into the woods then pop back into the field for a bit. The light was getting better so I grabbed my parka and started to walk closer to get a better look. The other guy said he had to leave but did say again that he didn’t think it was a wolf.

I was about a 1/2 mile from the ski area near one of the trail roads. I started to walk towards the river. I was about 100 ft from where I saw the animal from the road when I heard an owl screech coming from the woods to my right. On the edge of the woods this huge dog came running out of the trees. The best way to describe it was that it looked like a big hyena but it ran on two back legs and bent over. It had wooly black hair all over it’s body and a long thick tail. It must have weighed 200 lbs or more. I’ve been in the woods all my life and have never seen anything like this. It looked over at me but continued to run from right to left in front of me. It also made a steady loud panting sound as it ran.

I turned on a pivot and ran out of there hoping this animal wasn’t going to chase me. When I got to the car an old man had pulled off and standing there watching me. He wondered what I was doing. I yelled at him to “get the hell out of there” and said that a monster dog was out there. I think he believed me because the look on his face showed fear like he knew something was really out there.

I didn’t go to the ski area, instead I went back home all shook up and asking myself what I saw.

I read the stories about the Michigan dogman and something you had about one being seen in Wisconsin. What do you think this was? It was no wolf or any other animal native to the area.

Please don’t use my name if you pass this along. This is my work email, I can send you another later.

The guy who sent me your email address told me that there was a sighting last year just west of Duluth. He said it was a hunter that came across it while tracking a deer he had shot. I don’t know the details but if it looked like the animal I saw I’m sure he got the hell out of there. Thanks - J

Man Eating trees/plants

An old thread i done on abovetopsecret

Whilst researching various cryptids I came upon and interesting one it’s the man eating tree, yes you read that right.

There have been various legends dating back as far as the 1800’s, although there are many carnivorous plants such as the Nepenthes mirabilis found in many regions such as Borneo, Sumatra, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sulawesi, Maluku, Myanmar, Cambodia, New Guinea, Australia, Philippines, Indochina, China, Hong Kong, Micronesia, Macau and Palau and the Heliamphora typically found in Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil I have never heard of a man eating tree.

As various legends have it these trees are large enough to kill a full sized human by constricting them in its branches. Members of the Mkodo tribe of Madagascar offered a woman in sacrifice to the dreaded tree. So I decided to do a little digging to see if I could come up with something on this. I found info on this tree from the following site;

For the most part the aforementioned are mere annoyances, but there are other things in Madagascar that can make you twitch your last.

The most notorious is the so-called man-eating tree of Madagascar. The first European description of this bulbous tree, a kind of elephantine Venus flytrap, appeared in the South Australian Register of 1881. In horrifying detail, the author tells how he watched aghast as members of the Mkodo tribe offered a woman in sacrifice to the dreaded tree, whose white, transparent leaves reminded him of the quivering mouthparts of an insect:

The slender delicate palpi, with the fury of starved serpents, quivered a moment over her head, then as if instinct with demoniac intelligence fastened upon her in sudden coils round and round her neck and arms; then while her awful screams and yet more awful laughter rose wildly to be instantly strangled down again into a gurgling moan, the tendrils one after another, like great green serpents, with brutal energy and infernal rapidity, rose, retracted themselves, and wrapped her about in fold after fold, ever tightening with cruel swiftness and savage tenacity of anacondas fastening upon their prey.

www.pbs.org

It has been suggested that this tree is a fabrication as no one has come upon it again or the Mkodo tribe that is said to exist there. (Read the whole page on that site, some really freaky plants are there)
From another site

Several blood-drinking trees are reported from around the world. The man-eating tree of Madagascar is supposed to look like a big pineapple and exude a drugged liquid that is addictive. Once victims go far enough inside it, it closes and squeezes all juices out of the victim. Further investigation seems to discount these stories, suggesting instead that the tree exude a poisonous gas that causes animals to die at its base. In any case, either variety of death trees is presently unrecognized by science. The yate-veo tree of Central America is supposed to impale its victims on sharp spikes and then absorb the blood through its trunk, and the Nicaraguan dog-eating tree is supposed to entangle its victims with sticky vines and then suck all their blood out within five minutes.

www.newanimal.org

It seems they have described it as some sort of vampire tree interesting. There have been suggestions ranging from hoax to a lab experiment (its been suggested that in secret labs there exists a wide range of poisonous, toxic and even people eating plants). Here’s an interesting link I stumbled on www.unexplained-mysteries.com

It appears that a naturalist, a Mr. Dunstan by name, was botanising in one of the swamps around the Nicaragua Lake. The account goes on to relate that “while hunting for specimens he heard his dog cry out, as if in agony, from a distance. Running to the spot whence the animals cries came, Mr. Dunstan found him enveloped in a perfect network of what seemed to be a fine, rope-like tissue, of roots and fibers. The plant or vine seemed composed entirely of bare, interlacing stems, resembling more than anything else the branches of a weeping willow denuded of its foliage, but of a dark, nearly black hue, and covered with a thick, viscid gum that exuded from the pores. Drawing his knife, Mr. Dunstan attempted to cut the poor beast free, but it was with very great difficulty that he managed to sever the fleshy muscular fibers (sic) of the plant. When the dog was extricated from the coils of the plant, Mr. Dunstan saw to his horror that its body was bloodstained, while the skin appeared to be actually sucked or puckered in spots, and the animal staggered as if from exhaustion. In cutting the vine the twigs curled like living, sinuous fingers about Mr. Dunstan’s hand, and it required no slight force to free the member from their clinging grasp, which left the flesh red and blistered. The tree, it seems, is well known to the natives, who relate many stories of its death-dealing powers

So these natives believe that this is very real, there is also a legend of the Monkey killing tree, although I cant seem to find info regarding this apart from an odd snippet here and there but from what I gather it is much like the man eating tree, it gives out an odor to attract a monkey to it then coiled it up in its branches and crushes it. Beginning to sound like a very large Venice flytrap lol.

As well as Madagascar there is apparently reports that stem from Central America, South America, Mexico and other places as well. So it appears to be a fabrication but personally I don’t know, we know that there are some freaky animal eating plants out there, but the question is can they mutate into a tree? Or is it just some mutated plant. Its interesting to read (cant remember where now sighs) that there are labs out there that possibly have this sort of things in there green houses any one fancy going on a fact finding mission for me? If so:
